In 1826, Charles Lyne assumed the additional name and arms of Stephens by Royal Licence 'in grateful and affectionate regard for the memory of his kinsman the late John James Stephens of Lisbon in Portugal from whom he derived considerable property.' Charles Lyne Stephens was the son of the Rev. John Lyne of Liskeard, co. Cornwall. He married Wilhemina Augusta Tomkin of Lisbon in 1797.
