MAXIMILIAN I -- PFINTZING, Melchior (1481-1535). A collection of 25 leaves from the Theuerdank, Augsburg: Johann Schönsperger the elder, c.1519. Woodcut on each leaf, by Jost de Negker and Heinrich Kupferworm after various possibly including Leonhard Beck, Hans Burgkmair, Hans Schdufelein, hand-coloured possibly in a later hand. (Some soiling and some spotting, a few tears.) Each leaf window-mounted on card (410 x 270mm) with pen and ink and gilt borders; four of these mounted framed and glazed as one, 6 leaves individually mounted, framed and glazed, (leaves not examined outside of the mounts or frames). A GROUP OF LEAVES FROM THE MOST SPECTACULAR GERMAN ILLUSTRATED BOOK OF THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY. The woodcuts, designed by a team of the best-known artists of the day, illustrate an allegorical chivalric romance celebrating the exploits of the hero (Emperor Maximilian I) in overcoming a series of obstacles in his journey to seek the hand in marriage of Queen Ernreich (Mary of Burgundy).
