DENIS-LOUIS ANCELLET, LATE 18TH CENTURY
The rectangular removable top, inset with tooled leather to one side and baized to the other, enclosing an ebony gaming well, inlaid with green-stained and ivory, removable slide below inset with tooled leather to one side and inlaid with yew and fruitwood chequer-board to the other, the ends with frieze drawers, on four tapering turned and stop-fluted legs, stamped once 'D. L. ANCELLET' and with 'JME', re-mounted, restorations; together with a pair of associated silver plated candle sconces, fifteen ebony and fifteen sycamore gaming counters, and a modern leather dice cup

Denis-Louis Ancellet, maître 1766.

Ancellet (died 1823) was a well-respected ébéniste, and is known to have collaborated with his contemporary the renowned Adam Weisweiler; a console bearing both Ancellet's and Weisweiler's stamp is mentioned by P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 1989, p. 25. In 1791.
