AN OUTSTANDING COLLECTION FROM A EUROPEAN CELLAR
The following lots 1 to 108 are from a private European collector and includes many of the Finest & Rarest wines from many of the outstanding vintages of the last century; 1947, 1959, 1961, 1982 & 1985 are all well represented. From Bordeaux, the collection encompasses the First Growths, Lafite Rothschild, Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Margaux & Haut-Brion and an impressive collection of Pétrus, including rare large formats. From Burgundy, Romanée-Conti Grand Cru, La Tâche and Montrachet. Outstanding vintages of Spain's Vega Sicilia Unico and a selection of fine Port completes the collection.
Lots 1 to 108 were inspected and packed by Christie's specialists and removed from a private cellar on the Continent and transported to EHD for this sale.
Lying in Weybridge, Surrey (EHD)
Pétrus--Vintage 1947
Pomerol, cru exceptionnel
Worn capsule. Bin-soiled and stained label. Nicolas stamp. Level upper-shoulder
Tasting note: 1947 was a great vintage in Pomerol and, unsurprisingly, Pétrus is magnificent. Five notes, the best made in the 1990s when it was still virtually opaque, with a somewhat stodgy, unbudging nose, incredibly sweet and so full-bodied that the alcohol was positively burning. Most recently, two bottles, appearance less deep, lively but its mature colour displaying an orange rim. One bottle with rich bouquet but a whiff of oxidation and sour on the palate, the other more attractive. Last tasted June 2004. At best ***** M.B.
