BORDEAUX RARITIES FROM THE 1961 VINTAGE

When you're lucky, entering a wine cellar can be like stepping into a time capsule--in this case, back to 1961. When I first came upon this cellar, I knew we had something special. We stepped into a subterranean, purpose-built wine cellar maintaining about 53 degrees, and we were instantly surrounded by an unprecedented wealth of 1961 Bordeaux. The consignor explained to me that all of the '61s, and indeed most of the wine, was bought near or on release by his good friend. In 1974, he purchased the wines from his friend, and they haven't moved since. In other words, the wines in this consignment have only moved twice since their arrival stateside: once a few blocks from one wine cellar to another, and once to Christie's warehouse. The jewel of this consignment, of course, is the solid case of 1961 Pétrus. Beneath a stack of other '61 OWCs, some on offer here, this case rested, untouched for the last 35 years. As you can plainly see from the cover of this catalog, and from the numerous photos within, the bottles were tissue wrapped on inspection. The wood was banded at one point, and the staining on the wood from this band extends to the top, meaning that the top is original. As the pictures show, the labels and levels are phenomenal for a wine of this age. Of course, there are other great '61s in this collection too, and all with the same provenance. Bid with confidence as wines this pristine don't appear often. Pictures of these lots are available by contacting me directly.
