Lot Essay

A related whatnot or music stand by Gillows, made to a design illustrated in the Estimate Sketch Book for 1849, is illustrated in Susan Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, Woodbridge, 2008, vol.II, p.110, pl.658. Stuart notes a very similar, though larger, piece was described as a 'bookstand' in 1834.

A similar whatnot was sold anonymously Sotheby's, New York, 16 October 1993, lot 153 ($6,900 including premium).
