AN ENGLISH HISTORICAL TAPESTRY OF THE BATTLE AT SOLEBAY
MORTLAKE, CIRCA 1688, THE DESIGNS ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM VAN DE WELDE, BY THOMAS POYNTZ
Woven in wools and silks, depicting 'Fireships in Action' from the series of 'The Sea Battle at Solebay', with the scattered Anglo-French and Dutch fleets in lines of battle and with several burning and sinking ships, within an elaborate border decorated with naval trophies and implements, including globes, canons, compasses and flags, centred to the top with the coat-of-arms of George Legge, 1st Baron Dartmouth (c.1647-1691) and his wife Barbara, sole heiress of Sir Henry Archbold of Abbots Bromley, the sides with arms of England and Scotland and the cypher of James II, within a blue outer slip signed 'THOMAS POINTZ', the reverse with labels inscribed 'The Earl of Iveagh, Pyrford Court, Woking, Surrey' and 'A.J.B. Wace, Esq. Department of Textiles, Victoria and Albert Museum, South Kensington'
