KANGXI UNDERGLAZE-BLUE SIX-CHARACTER MARK WITHIN A DOUBLE CIRCLE AND OF THE PERIOD (1662-1722)
With gently rounded sides rising from a short foot, the interior delicately painted with a pair of magpies, one in flight and the other perched on a branch of flowering prunus growing amidst bamboo and rocks, the exterior decorated with sprays of prunus and peony, interspersed by bamboo

Lot Essay

A dish of this pattern is illustrated in Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong: Qing Porcelain from the Palace Museum Collection, Hong Kong, 1989, p. 116, no. 99. This design provides a rebus for 'happiness up to the tips of your eyebrows'. Compare also a pair of dishes with similar decoration was sold in our New York rooms, 19 September 2006, lot 346.
