Lot Essay

The present watercolour could be one of a number of imaginary narrative scenes inspired by works by popular authors such as Dickens, Burns and Tennyson that Munnings executed using a muted palette. The stories often fired his imagination, and, fuelled by sentimental and often introspective thoughts, he would create these narrative compositions. Characteristics such as windy conditions frequented the titles of many of the works he exhibited at the Norwich Art Circle biannual exhibitions between 1897-1911, such as Around me howls a wintery sky (1907) and Raving winds around her blowing (1903).

The watercolour will be included in Lorian Peralta Ramos's forthcoming Catalogue Raisonné of the work of Sir Alfred Munnings.
