Lot Essay

With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch in 1934 and its subsequent sale on 6 May 1936.

Reference 96, definitely the signature piece if one had to think of a single Patek Philippe wristwatch model, was made in numerous versions and in all case materials. White gold however is by far the rarest and in-depth research only discovered nine examples to have publicly appeared in over 30 years of auctions. The present "Calatrava" is however the earliest known example of this series made as early as 1934. The most typical features visible to the beholder are the snap on back with the small lip or nail piece standing out on the case band and most importantly the white enamel dial with black Breguet numerals.

Last seen on the auction market in 1985, this white gold reference 96 is certainly one of the most exclusive and attractive Calatravas to be offered in public in recent years.
