FREUD, Sigmund (1856-1939). Die Traumdeutung. Leipzig and Vienna: Franz Deuticke, 1900.
8° (225 x 142mm). Contemporary half black morocco, spine lettered in gilt (lightly rubbed). Provenance: Dumeng Bezzola (1868-1936; pencilled signature and stamp on title, annotations).
FIRST EDITION of what is 'unquestionably Freud's greatest single work' (PMM), from the collection of the Swiss psychiatrist and contemporary of Freud, Dr. Dumeng Bezzola. 'It contains all the basic components of psychoanalytic theory and practice: the erotic nature of dreams, the "oedipus complex", the libido, and the rest; all related to the ... sub-conscious' (PMM). Freud has been ranked 'with Charles Darwin and Karl Marx as one of the three great revolutionary thinkers of the nineteenth century' (pace I. Bernhard Cohen, cf. Grolier Medicine). Bezzola, a student of August Forel, also investigated hysterical phenomenon and supported Freud and Breuer's early theories. He developed his own cathartic treatment, called psychosynthesis, but over time the two pyschiatrists' theories parted, and Freud and Jung became critical of Bezzola. The present copy shows a close and repeated reading of the text by Bezzola, with his annotations and underlinings in multi-coloured pencils; some passages are dated and timed. Included in the lot are 4 offprints of works by Bezzola (including on dream hypnosis [quoting Freud extensively], one with printed presentation, and one investigating the role of alcohol in dementia) and a printed summary of one of his lectures. Garrison-Morton 4980; Grolier/Horbiltt 32; Grolier Medicine 87; Norman F 33; PMM 389.
