A LARGE MOULDED AND INSCRIBED OVAL INKCAKE
QING DYNASTY, 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY
The inkcake of oval form in imitation of an inkstone, the top surface carved with a boatman seated on the stern of his sampan in a river landscape scene below a gathering of scholars at the angled water trough, all below a border carved with a celestial palace and keyfret patterns, the reverse with figures in various pursuits along an embankment, above a square panel enclosing an inscription by Chen Jiru (1558-1639) followed by his seal, the sides with groups of figures in scholarly pursuits, traces of gilt pigment remaining
