A FINE JADEITE FIGURE OF GUANYIN
The deity shown standing in a loose-fitting robes tied at the waist, the oval face naturalistically carved with detailed eyes, a straight nose and indented lips providing a serene expression, backed with a flaming-shaped mandorla, holding a ruyi scepter in her right hand and suspending a fly-whisk form the raised left wrist, accompanied with a cheerful boy crouching below blossoming lotus, all rising from cresting waves with leaping carps, a highly translucent stone with bright apple-green suffusions

Lot Essay

There are examples of jade carving of Guanyin depicted as a single figure. This piece belongs to the rare group of Guanyin with companion. A convention of this group representation is Guanyin and two acolytes, of which a jadeite example was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 1 June 2011, lot 3789. The present lot shows Guanyin accompanied by a boy with lotus, conveying the blessing of giving birth to distinguished sons.
