Lot Essay
The present book satchel is decorated and embellished with an interlaced foliate design. Although difficult to read, the inscription on the lid is probably 'IHS', Christ's monogram, but if not may also be the original owner's initials. The satchel could be tied around the waist by cords running through the slots on either side, allowing the owner to carry small and precious objects, manuscripts or cutlery, as can be seen in three further lots from the Marquet de Vasselot collection (lots 6, 7, and 15).
