CHURCHILL, Winston S. Photograph signed and inscribed "To Alice [Keppel] from Winston," n.d. [ca. 1940]. Black and white photo portrait 6 3/8 x 5¾in., showing Churchill seated at the Cabinet table at 10 Downing Street.
A FINE, WAR-DATE PHOTO SIGNED AND INSCRIBED TO KING EDWARD VII'S FORMER MISTRESS. Twenty-nine year old Alice Keppel (1868-1947) became the 56-year old King's mistress in 1898. "His accession to the throne in 1901 as King Edward VII in no way diminished her role...She became one of the leading personalities of the Edwardian court" and "was an accepted, respected, and highly visible member of the royal entourage. She often travelled abroad with the court--notably to the king's favourite resort of Biarritz--and remained, in the widely used phrase, 'la favorita'" (DNB). She is the great-grandmother of Camila Parker-Bowles, the second wife of Prince Charles, Prince of Wales.
