LINCOLN'S APPROVES THE APPOINTMENT OF A WESTCHESTER COUNTY MAN, Henry C. Lockwood, who comes strongly recommended: "Respectfully submitted to the Secretary of War. I would be glad for the appointment to be made whenever it consistently can be." Tompkins commended Lockwood as an "able instructor in infantry tactics" from the Hamilton Military Institute in White Plains, N.Y. Lockwood served as a Brevet Maj. as a staff officer in Washington D.C. He suffered a wound in January 1865 however, that eventually led to his paralysis and admittance to a home for disabled veterans in Hampton, Virginia in 1899.
