The film was shot by Robert Frank, and is mainly black and white footage, interspersed with flashes of colour for the most exciting scenes. Instructed by the Stones to create an honest film about a rock band on the road, Frank's film would ultimately contain footage deemed to be too close to the bone; the band would win a legal fight to stop it's general release or public viewing, with a stipulation that it can only be shown once a year, at which Frank has to be present.
