Lot Essay

These cylindrical cigarette and vanity cases were inspired by the Japanese inro and were very popular with Cartier clients in the 1920s. Each of them would have 'vanity' compartments (for lipstick, powder, etc..) and 'cigarette' compartments (usually the inside of one lid to hold the cigarettes and a compartment for matches with a strike-a-light in the lid).
