Château Lafite-Rothschild--Vintage 1987
Pauillac, 1er cru classé
A hot and dry summer followed abundant rain which lasted through the entire harvest, leading to a meager yield. The final result was nonetheless very satisfactory. Indeed, a severe selection produced very balanced, tender and fruity wines. The rains made the grapes very ripe.
Tasting note:
Jancis Robinson and I approached Eddie Penning-Rowsell's '10-year' first growths tasting without enthousiasm but, of course curious to see how they compared. Lafite turned out to have a surprisingly deep, plummy colour, already showing some maturity; nose notbad at all; medium sweetness and body, lean fruit, loose knit, attenuated yet blunt ended. Last noted June 1997 ** MB
