Château Margaux--Vintage 1984

The cold and rainy weather during the flowering caused the worst case of "coulure" in history, i.e. preventing the flower from setting into fruit. Summer was quite hot and sunny, but heavy rain in September hampered the ripening of the grapes. Fortunately, the harvesting was carried out in sunshine, which enabled us to bring in sufficiently ripe grapes in this difficult vintage. (The picking began 1st October)
Tasting note:
The 1984 Margaux is one of the best wines of the vintage. It is rich in color and extract, and has an attractive perfume of violets, black currant fruit, toasty oak, herbs, and licorice. The wine is long, deep, and concentrated, for the vintage it is comparable to the property's 1980. Anticipated maturity: Now-2000. 87 point. Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book, 3rd Edition # B1 (Jan 1998)
