Château Margaux--Vintage 1996

After a very quick flowering, the summer was unsettled, with alternating periods of hot and cool weather and stormy showers, though less heavy in the Mdoc than on the right bank. As from the 1st September, cool and very dry weather set in for three weeks. It then rained and fine weather returned for the harvesting of the Cabernets. (The picking began on 23rd September)
Tasting note:
An outstanding wine and, as so often, a joy to taste from the start. A high percentage (85 of Cabernet Sauvingon and Franc. Totally different style to the '95, leaner, spicy, taut fruit, finesse. Excellent notes either side of 2000: very sweet yet very tannic. Most recently: good nose, dumb at first but developed lovely fragrance; good flavour and length but tannic and unready. Last tasted June 2003 **(***) 2010 - 2030. MB
