CHÂTEAU AUSONE

The Vauthier family achieved sole ownership of the estate in 1995 and began a string of critically acclaimed vintages greatly increasing the prices of Ausone and introducing some to dub in the next Petrus or Cheval Blanc. Instead, Ausone is the first Ausone.
The total production is only one fourth of Cheval Blanc, less than half of that of Petrus and totally different in style than either. According to William Younger in Gods, Men and Wine, vines were grown in this area of the Gironde as early as the first century AD. Retraction of the Domitian Edict by the Emperor Probus began a surge of vineyard development of the region was chronicled by Ausonius, professor of Rethoric at Bordeaux University. He had considerable vineyards of his own, referencing if not establishing the legend of the château. Ausone is singular and distinctive wine with back-breaking elegance and poetic mineral, almost steely, aromatics. Superb length and elegance, impressive concentration and intensity.

Château Ausone--Vintage 1983
Saint-Emilion, 1er grand cru classé (A)

Tasting note:
A good Ausone. At ten years of age fully mature, rather weak-rimmed; its bouquet fully evolved, sweet, soft, vanillin reminding me of curling automn leaves. Sweet, soft texture, open knit, chewy. Last tasted June 1993 ****. MB
