Château Cheval-Blanc--Vintage 1984
Saint-Emilion, 1er grand cru classé (A)

This is a difficult year for the winemaker: after the cold comes the rain in spring. Then the hot weather sets in but is weakened by brutal rains causing strong sag in Merlots. A large number of Merlot grapes had to be sacrificed since there were only one or two nice grapes per bunch. July and August were very beautiful. Grapes were picked from October 2nd to 12th. It has a poor yield of 17 ho/ha. Sorting was difficult because of the heterogeneity of the grapes.

Tasting note:
Attractive colour its best feature. Bitter tannins managing to cope well with lamb cutlets (1990). Under more clinical conditions - one has to concentrate at blind tastings - its appearance was not particularly notable, its nose a bit odd, quite attractive in its way (I wrote 'Cheeval Blanc'?). sweet, not bad fruit,silky/leathery tannins and quite good length. Last tasted Oct 1992 ** On of the better '84s. MB
