Château Cheval-Blanc--Vintage 1987
Saint-Emilion, 1er grand cru classé (A)

This is what they call a jealous year, which means that the year has a capricious climate, not to say paradoxical. The flower is early, coming out on June 1st , but it rains throughout June with a tornado on the 7th. There is sag and millerandage in July. The nice weather eventually arrives in August and in September there is alternatively nice weather and rain. The quality requirements force thorough sorting out and to only keeping the best.

Tasting note:
The 1987 Cheval Blanc is a successful wine - for the vintage. The spicy, herbaceous, sweet nose is followed by a precocious, round, fruity, light-bodied wine without much grip or structure. It does possess delicious, weedy, curranty fruit buttressed by gobs of sweet, smoky oak. 85 points. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate # 88 (Aug 1993)
