PETRUS

Petrus, one of the world's rarest and most expensive wines was not so well known until the 1960's like many other Right Bank wines. It was only when the Moueix family bought a half share in the property in 1962 that its true potentiel began to be fully realized.
This magical 11,4 hectares vineyard is located on a plateau on the highest part of Pomerol in the far east of the appellation. The topsoil and the subsoil at Petrus are almost all clay (in neighboring properties the soil is a mixture of gravel-sand or clay-sand) and merlot flourishes in this soil. The Petrus vineyard is planted with 95 Merlot. The wines are unusually old and are only replanted after reach 70 years of age.
The fruit of these vines is hand-harvested only in the afternoon, when the morning dew has evaporated, so as not to risk even the slightest dilution of quality. The grapes are fermented in cement vats and the wine is aged in 100 new oak barels for 22-28 months. It is bottled unfiltered.
Petrus is extraordinarily rich, powerful and concentrated, often with characteristics of chocolates, truffles, Asian spices and ultra-ripe, creamy, black fruits. Petrus is usually approachable after a decade or so in bottle, but the wines from the very greatest years will continue improving for many more years.
Petrus has a mythical quality when poured and a magical taste when sipped; of all the wines in the world it retains a mystique only broken when the cork is pulled.

Pomerol, cru exceptionnel

Tasting note:
Picked in one day by a large team at the end of a very hot harvest. My highest marks in the early to mid-1990s: rich, velvety, fleshy, 'a velvet-lined mouthfiller'. Fully evolved but with all the components to warrant a long life. Most recently, still deep and richly coloured; bouquet harmonious and complacent; full, rich, certainly impressive but if one is to be overcritical, a bit obvious and lacking the zest and drama of the top Mdocs. But this will not deter the world's richest. Last tasted Oct 2000 *****. MB
