Lot Essay

This is one of a series of paintings of Greek dancers by John Craxton from 1951, when he was designing the décor for Frederick Ashton's Covent Garden production of 'Daphnis and Chloe' starring Margot Fonteyn and Michael Somes. Craxton persuaded Ashton that the ballet dancers should wear modern Greek dress and that the choreography should include Greek dancing, for which he provided both images and a demonstration. The artist saw this dancing sailor in a taverna on the island of Poros.
