Lot Essay

The Moroccan Berber politician, General Mohammed Oufkir (1920-1972) was highly influential in Morocco during the 1960s and by 1971 had become Interior Minister for King Hassan II. In 1972 a failed Republican coup against the King left him exposed, and he was believed to have committed suicide. He had appeared frequently in the French press when he was tried and convicted of murder in 1967, after a series of forced disappearances. These images of a sinister manipulator who always appeared in dark glasses became the inspiration for Frink's Goggle Head sculptures.
