Lot Essay

In Connemara is dated 1925-1930 on stylistic grounds. Henry often produced compositions that are closely related to one another, mere variations on a theme. This is the case with the present picture as well as Going to the Creamery in Co. Tipperary, 1927-28 (Kennedy, 2007, no. 664), The Milk Cart, 1928-29 (ibid., 683), and Connemara Cottages, circa 1928-30 (ibid., 682), all of which employ a similar foreground set against variations in the background although, unusual for the time, the Going to the Creamery and Milk Cart pictures incorporate figures. In Connemara was issued as a colour reproduction by Combridge's, Dublin, in autumn 1931. It is inscribed 'The Village by the Roadside, Connemara' on the reverse, but possibly not in the artist's hand.
