Elizabeth wows President Reagan with her performance in Little Foxes A fine set of mementos from a crucial moment in Taylor's career when, A fine set of mementos from a crucial moment in Taylor's career when, at age 49, she shifted from screen to the stage and took on the demanding role of the ruthless Regina in Lillian Hellman's play Little Foxes, about the sharp-knifed tensions in a Southern family. The role came about in one of the great accidents in theatre history. During the run of Brigadoon, the producer Zev Bufman received a request from the house manager whether "a Senator's wife" could have the VIP seat next to him for that evening's performance. The Senator's wife was Mrs. John Warner! Bufman asked Taylor why she never appeared on Broadway. "Because I've never been asked," Liz replied. Bufman asked that night, and the production of Little Foxes was built around her. There were 47 performances in Washington D.C. before the production opened on Broadway to rave reviews and 123 sold out performances. Frank Rich in the New York Times wrote that Taylor's performance "may just knock you out of your seat." She had exactly that effect on Ronald Reagan and his guests in the Presidential Box that night, judging by their comments on their place cards: Nancy Reagan: "Dear Elizabeth--Just like Metro days--but better. You were marvelous and I know John is proud--as I am. Love, Nancy." Vice-president Bush: "What a wonderful performance. We loved every minute. Hooray for you! George Bush." Barbara Bush: "With love from your Senate leader. For tonight and every night of this play you are surely the Leader in every way. Affectionately, Barbara." Senator Warner: "I'm a proud husband, but my only safe deposit box is my heart--love, but no bonds!" Taylor won a Tony nomination for best actress that year, but ended her
