MALTESE TREASURES
Malta was an important naval station for the Royal Navy in the 19th and 20th centuries and naval officers and their families often brought back silver, furniture and paintings as mementos of their tour of duty. The island went through various occupations which were reflected in the mixture of styles found in their silver, the prevalent influences being Italian, French and English yet Maltese silver still managed a distinctive look of it's own. The oil lamp featured in this sale is a direct copy of an Italian one whereas the cream jug is entirely in the English style, but unlike an English one, has a cover to keep away the flies in a hot climate. The covered sugar bowl whist borrowing from Italy is distinctively Maltese.
The Knights Hospitaller, otherwise known as the Knights of Malta, are inextricably tied up with the island's history and the arms of one of these knights adds considerably to the pedigree and value of the pair of candlesticks also found in this sale.
