PICHON BARON

Château Pichon-Longueville is one of Bordeaux's most famous "Super Seconds". The 70 hectare property is located in the south of Pauillac, and the vineyards are planted with 60 Cabernet Sauvignon, 35 Merlot, 4 Cabernet Franc and 1 Petit Verdot. The château was bought by the French insurance company, AXA Millésimes in 1987. Jean-René Matignon is in charge of winemaking, Patrick Pinto is the cellar master, Joël Dupuy is the vineyard manager and Christian Seely is the Managing Director of the estate. The average age of the vines is 30 years and grapes are all hand-harvested and sorted in the vineyard. Vinfification is done in computerized tanks. The wine is aged for between 16 to 18 months in oak. Annual production is approximately 400,000 bottles and the second wine is called Les Tourelles de Longueville which has been produced since the 1986 vintage and has a higher proportion of Merlot which normally accounts for 50 of the blend (40 Cabernet Sauvignon and 10 Cabernet Franc).
