Château Haut-Brion--Vintage 1945
Pessac-Léognan, 1er cru classé
Levels: one upper shoulder, one upper mid shoulder; short lead Château-embossed capsules reveal vintage branding on cork, one lightly corroded capsule at top, one nicked capsule, lightly bin soiled labels
"Again, a superb wine, possibly the best ever Haut-Brion. That great taster Harry Waugh merely wrote "Really good, heavenly wine." What this wine manages to do is to combine concentration with elegance and, despite being laden with 1945 tannin, it is relatively unobtrusive-or at least, it gits in. To describe all its virtues and nuances is impossible: consistently deep in colour, 'warm ruby' quite recently noted, with a rich, mahogany, mature rim; its bouquet fragrant of course. Scanning my notes, 'vanilla chocolate', tobacco, earthy, harmonious, honeycomb, touch of liquorice; silky texture, crisp fruit, luscious, perfect weight, great length. A gentle giant. But all the time, remembering it is a 1er cru classé Graves, not a Médoc." MB, Vintage Wine, December 2000
