Tapering cylindrical on spreading foot, with a central reeded rib, the hinged cover with an openwork thumbpiece, later set inside with a coin, engraved with a coat-of-arms and later with an inscription, marked near handle and on handle

The arms are those of Herring impaling Inglis, for Julines Herring (1732-1797), of Heybridge Hall, co. Essex and Pauls Island, Jamaica, and his wife Mary, daughter of John Inglis of Philadelphia and his wife Catherine McCall, whom he maried in 1761.
