Lot Essay

Zobel was born in Memmingen,Swabia. He was trained in the family tradition as a confectioner but rejected this to become a painter. After studying minature painting in Holland he came to London in 1784.It was in London that the artist developed a reputation as a 'Sand-Painter', his patrons included George III.
