Lot Essay

The maker's mark corresponds to August Wilhelm Holmström. According to L. Bäcksbacka, St. Petersburgs Juvelerare, Guld-Och Silversmeder, 1714-1870, Helsinki, 1951, p. 237, August Wilhelm Holmström was born in Helsinki in 1829. He was apprenticed to Herold in St Petersburg and became a journeyman in 1850 and a master in 1857. He was a goldworker and jeweller when he bought the workshop of Frederick Hammarström. He worked for Fabergé and was for some time workmaster in that firm. He died in 1903.
