ST ANDREW, historiated initial S cut from an Antiphonal, in Latin, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, [Germany, 17th century]. 107 x 106mm. St Andrew stands with his cross saltire in a landscape, on the verso, three lines of text below three lines of music on four-line staves in red, containing part of the 5th antiphon from lauds, the feast of St Andrew, 'Maximilla christo am[abilis]' (a few slight scratches with loss to gold on initial).
A colourful initial which would have marked the feast of St Andrew from the Sanctoral cycle. The acanthus detailing and treatment of both the figure and the landscape follow stylistic conventions found in German illumination. Together with: a 19th-century illuminated leaf on vellum, 240 x 180mm, containing a prayer in German to St Eligius, the patron saint of goldsmiths, with miniature and three-quarter Bruges-Ghent style border.
