RARE FIRST EDITION OF FISCHART'S FAMOUS POEM COMMEMORATING THE HIRSEBREIFAHRT. In 1456, a bet was made between the cities of Strasbourg and Zurich as to whether it was possible to supply a hypothetically besieged Strasbourg with warm food. The citizens of Zurich prepared a pot of gruel, and raced by boat in just 22 hours, apparently delivering it warm. On 20 June 1576, the race was repeated, and the gruel was apparently so hot on arrival, that the citizens of Strasbourg burned their months on it (see lot 29). In celebration of this feat, the present 1174-line work of celebration was composed. The present work has a variant title, with 'Geselschafft' for 'Gesellschafft' in the fifth line, the unseparated 'außgeschriben' in the sixth line, and with three black lines at the base of the vignette. ONE OF ONLY 3 COPIES OFFERED AT AUCTION IN OVER A CENTURY. VD-16 F-1146.
