A FINE PHOTOGRAPHIC POTRAIT AND MANUSCRIPT POEM BY KONSTANTIN ROMANOV. The lyrical sonnet addresses one of the ancient warriors of Russia, a Bogatyr, and recalls the glories of the past. Grandson of Nicholas I, Konstantin was trained for service in the navy, and saw action during the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-78, but is best remembered as a poet, dramatist, translator, and the elected president of the Academy of Sciences. The recipient of the poem and photograph was S.F. Platonov (1860-1933), the famous historian who taught members of the Imperial family. After the revolution he became president of the Archaeological Commission, and director of Pushkin House and the Academy of Sciences. (2)
