A GROUP OF LETTERS, SIX OF THESE APPARENTLY UNPUBLISHED, LINKING TWO PRE-EMINENT FIGURES IN THE AGE OF CATHERINE THE GREAT. Rumiantsev, one of Russia's greatest generals, writes to his friend, the great statesman Panin, during the closing months of the First Russo-Turkish war. Rumiantsev discusses the population of Moldavia and their attitude to the Empress; acknowledges his debt to Panin for looking after his sons; thanks him for forwarding Catherine's message on the progress of the peace negotiations and naval maneuvers; forwards a translation of a letter from the Grand Vizier (see below); reports on the Crimean forts and navigation; reports on the negotiations with the Grand Vizier; writes on the activities of the Princes of Holstein and Darmstadt, and Count Solms; writes on the success of the 'Crimean Affair' and the part of Prince Vasilii Mikhailovich in it; announces the advance of the Royal army into Moldavia and how this may affect the peace; writes of Prince Vasilii's departure with the final articles of the peace treaty, and awaiting its ratification, and mentions the 'Tartar Affair' (i.e. the Pugachev Rebellion) and the command of the 2nd Army. Together with 28 pages, 4to, of related material: an extract copied from a letter dated 23 January to the Ambassador Plenipotentiary and Privy Council; a copy letter dated ?27 January to the same; and a group of translations into Russian of letters mostly from the Giray Khan and the Grand Vizir to various recipients.
