Lieutenant-General Sir Brian Horrocks (1895-1985) served as a corps commander under Montgomery in both the North African and European campaigns, and was described by Eisenhower as 'the outstanding British general under Montgomery'. Horrocks's inscription in the volume, at variance with Montgomery's, records that 'I made a bet with Field Marshal Montgomery that the war would not be over in 1944'.
