CHURCHILL, Winston S. Autograph letter signed to Alderman Waddington (of Oldham), 105 Mount Street, 24 November 1900, marked 'Private', 5 pages, 8vo, bifolia; envelope; with a letter to Waddington from Robert Whittaker, 17 April 1900, 'I overhear remarks in this Club and elsewhere that make me thing that many people do not like Mr Churchill as much as we do', enclosing a copy letter from Churchill in Durban, 11 March 1900.
'SHORT AND FULL OF TOIL & TROUBLE ARE OUR LIVES'. Churchill writes to a suppporter in his Oldham constituency, who is retiring because of ill health, thanking him for his 'great services' to the Conservative Party, paying tribute to their shared work and his 'feelings of sincere personal friendship and affection' for him, and promising him (as a 'sacred trust') that he will use all his influence to obtain an ecclesiastical preferment for his son. He ends with an exhortation to 'Keep a good heart and a stern courage. Short and full of toil & trouble are our lives. You have done your duty nobly always, and what can a man do more!'.
