CHURCHILL, Winston S. Autograph letter signed ('Winston S.C.') to 'My dear Scribe' [Edward Grigg, later 1st Baron Altrincham, his company commander during his training with the Grenadier Guards], n.p. [France], 6 January 1916, one page, 4to.

'IT WILL ALL COME RIGHT IN THE END'; a characteristically robust view from the trenches. Churchill cannot foresee any situation which will call for his return to England, in the absence of an offer of a ministerial position with 'real power ... & anything less than that I do not intend to take'. In the meantime, he is concentrating on his immediate activities, doing his best to 'close my mental eyes' to the bigger picture, of which he judges 'It will all come right in the end: though not by the shortest or least costly method'. The letter goes on with references to the pleasures of training under Griggs, paying tribute to his kindness and comradeship, and concludes with practical requests for advice on trench foot and for a list of songs 'of a respectable character' which are popular with the troops.

Two days before writing the present letter Churchill had been formally appointed Lieutenant-Colonel in the Royal Scots Fusiliers. Churchill remained on friendly terms with Griggs and in World War II appointed him as Minister of State in the Middle East.
