The Battle of Jutland of 31 May - 1 June had initially been announced as a German victory, and Churchill's statement (which tallies more closely with the historical consensus) was intended to reassure. The statement, and its effect on the stock markets, was to form the basis of an elaborate anti-Semitic libel by Lord Alfred Douglas against Churchill and his relationship with Sir Ernest Cassel. As Churchill was still out of office at this stage, his role as a semi-official government spokesman is curious.
