Angel, 1937 was the last collaboration between Marlene Dietrich and Travis Banton and was followed by his departure from Paramount Studios. The rich bead encrusted gold three piece costume, comprising matching jacket, skirt and fur trimmed stole, was designed by Banton and is reported to have cost $8000 to produce, at the time making it one of the most expensive film costumes ever to be made. It was designed for Dietrich's character Maria Barker to wear to the Opera, accompanied by her husband.
The jacket and skirt made for the film were offered for auction at Christie's, New York, December 12th 1990, lot 134.
