James Dean
An extraordinary hand-written letter from James Dean to girlfriend Barbara Glenn, dated 5-19-54, the date written in pencil in another hand [most likely the recipient's]; the letter written in blue ink on two sides of a sheet of plain note paper, signed Love Jim twice on the second side, the letter addressed Darling, begins with the surprising opening line I haven't written because I have fallen in love, only through further reading does the true context of the statement become clear, when Dean refers to the picture of Cisco the Kid, the new member of the family that he has enclosed [included], he goes into detail explaining that Cisco is a well-trained but very spirited horse, that it is the trainer in the picture and the horse is a thoroughbred Palomino.... may use him in the movie, before abruptly changing the subject matter by stating I'm very lonely and how I hate this place, beginning a new paragraph he tells Barbara not to call, explaining at the start of the second side that he still has not got a place of his own, before indicating how much he appreciates receiving Barbara's letters Just keep writing. Honey these are the nicest, sweetest letters in the world, Dean's thoughts then turn to his and Barbara's associates, which only flames his fond memories of friends and places, along with the dislike for his current location, in the final paragraph Dean asks, with a sense of despondency Maybe you can come and see me sometime before ending on the positive note I'll be home soon Love Jim, a postscript asks for Barbara to return the picture and finishes with a second Love Jim, 2 pages on 1 piece of note paper, folded, 46 lines, -- 6¼x10 in. (16x25.5 cm.); accompanied by the original, aforementioned, black and white photograph of Cisco and trainer - 3x4½in. (7.5x11.5cm), the original mailing envelope date stamped Burbank, Calif.
