Lot Essay

The tablet on this chimneypiece relates to the Aesop Fable of the Bear and the Bee-hives. The story tells of a bear that finds his way into a garden where bees are kept. The bear greedily turns over the hives in search of the honey, causing the bees to swarm. He is stung repeatedly while devouring the honey and maddened by the pain, tears the skin from his head with his claws.
