These unusual chairs appear to be part of a larger suite. An armchair of this model with eagle-headed arms (one of a pair) is illustrated in F. H. Hinckley, A Directory of Queen Anne, Early Georgian and Chippendale Furniture, New York, 1971, p. 70, fig. 83 and F. L. Hinckley, Masterpieces of Queen Anne and Georgian Furniture, New York, 1991, pl 36, pl. 18, fig. 42. The pair was from the collection of George F. Baker, sold Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York. A single side chair of this model was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 7 July 1994, lot 90.
The iconic back design is based on the celebrated set of chairs at Stourhead, Wiltshire thought to have been supplied by cabinet-maker Giles Grendey in circa 1746 (illustrated in R. Macquoid and R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, rev. edn., 1954, vol. I, p. 275, fig. 154). It is intriguing to compare these satyr-headed chairs to a single armchair in the collection of Sir John Soane's Museum, London which features in the 1837 inventory as '1 Richly Carved Chair with cane seat'. This unusual chair, similarly carved with flower-heads and foliage in low relief, is discussed and illustrated in H. Dorey, 'A Catalogue of the Furniture in Sir John Soane's Museum', Furniture History, 2008, no. 94, pp. 96-98.
