George Pryer and his partner James Steains are first recorded at 30 Brydges Street in 1810. Two years later they were joined by John Mackenzie, and the partnership of Pryer, Steains & Mackenzie traded until 1817. They were known for making and marketing patent furniture, offering 'Patent Brass Scre Bedsteads, Sofa & Chair Beds, Dining Tables, Sideboards &c,' . The brass plaque on this extended dining table is typical of patent furniture makers, who often labeled their work. (G. Beard and C. Gilbert, The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers, Leeds, 1986, p. 720).
