The upper section with three quarter brass and mahogany gallery and an arrangement of drawers surrounding an arch behind a writing slope inset with three later tooled leather panels, the center section with an adjustable slope and hinged to reveal a further fitted niche, over a sham frieze drawer and kneehole flanked by small drawers and cabinet doors, the arched sides fitted with further doors and one interior pedestal with two doors, conforming plinth, gallery later, one drawer bottom with pencil inscription B LAWSON

Lot Essay

This desk resided in the drawing room of Jean H. Vanderbilt's Manhattan apartment at 19 East 72nd Street. This was the last of at least four residences designed by legendary decorators Robert Denning and Vincent Fourcade. Jean was married to Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt II (d. 1999), a great sportsman and grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt II, reputed to be the world's richest man. The desk was sold along with the remaining contents at Christie's on 24 March 1994, lots 1-91.
