AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED VOLUTE-KRATER
ATTRIBUTED TO THE PAINTER OF COPENHAGEN 4223, CIRCA 330-320 B.C.
The obverse with two nude youths within an Ionic naiskos with scrolling on the podium, one seated on a mantle holding a spear, facing a standing youth with a shield and a sheathed sword, a standing draped female to the left holding a patera and a wreath, a fillet before her, a nude youth to the right with a mantle and a staff in his left hand, a long-handled patera in his right, a fillet before him, the neck with a white female head emerging from a blossom amist florals, a band of rosettes and beading above; the reverse with a nude youth and a draped female flanking a filleted stele, dotted circles on the podium, the youth on the left with a mantle and an open box in his left hand, a wreath in his right, the female with a patera in her right hand, a wreath in her left, a fillet before her, a palmette on the neck, a band of laurel above; a band of meander encircling below, vertical lines above ovolo on the shoulders on both sides, wave below the rim, ovolo on the rim on the obverse, dots on the reverse, palmette complexes below the handles, the volutes with molded heads of Io, in added white and yellow on the obverse, the shoulders with molded duck heads framing the handles, details in added white and yellow
